Undeserved Blessings

Yesterday, the phone rang.  It was one of our dear friends from church, Dan, calling to ask if he could bless us by mowing a part of our property with his tractor.  Dan’s call was a huge blessing to us for you see, a couple of years ago, our riding lawnmower died, and our financial priorities haven’t included getting it fixed.  When you have five acres of weeds, and the only way you can mow it is with a push mower, most of the property doesn’t get mowed. When Dave has free moments (which is not often lately), he goes outside and dutifully mows the areas that are most in need of attention.

I don’t know if Dan knows how much he blessed us yesterday.  His gift to us spoke volumes of the Lord’s lovingkindness for us.  We have done absolutely nothing to deserve Dan’s kindness and that is part of what makes the gift so special.

Dan lives on thirty-five acres and works a regular job.  Mowing his own property is most likely a full-time job.  Dan’s gift is like Christ’s gift.  We don’t deserve Dan’s kindness and we did and can do nothing to deserve Christ’s great gift of salvation.  But Christ offers it anyway.  Freely.  Completely.  Sacrificially.  And just as Dan’s gift will cost him something, Christ’s gift cost him everything.

How rude would we be if we turned our noses up at Dan’s kindness?  How utterly rude and reprobate are we if we turn our backs on Christ’s great gift given on Calvary?
